Vermont Issues First Recreational Cannabis Retail Permits

Adult-use sales in the state could begin as early as Oct. 1.

Vermont authorities have given the green light to the first three recreational cannabis retailers in the state, meaning adult-use sales could begin as soon as Oct. 1.

According to a news release from the Vermont Cannabis Control Board (CCB), new retail permits were granted Wednesday to Mountain Girl Cannabis in Rutland and FLORA Cannabis in Middlebury.

A third license was granted to an existing medical marijuana company, Champlain Valley Dispensary, which does business as CeresMED, to sell recreational at its South Burlington location.

“Today’s license approvals mark a historic moment for Vermont that is decades in the making,” CCB Chairman James Pepper said in the release.

The trio of companies can begin sales as soon as they pay state license fees and get local sign-off from any municipal or county authorities. As a result, sales launches will vary from business to business, according to the release.

VT Digger reported that some localities – such as Burlington, where CeresMED is permitted for recreational sales – have forbade recreational marijuana sales from starting until at least Oct. 1, and a spokesman for FLORA said they’re aiming for a sales launch that same date in Middlebury.
